(14/2/2010) - Stelara Approved

SMC approves new medicines in Scotland, In England it`s NICE.
Patient charities can send in specific submissions about new drugs which they believe will assist.
PSALV sent in a submission re Stelara, also Etrivex.
We believe this has assisted Scots patients living with psoriasis, as we need a wide range of options available.

http://www.pharmajobs.co.uk/blog/index.php/2010/02/stelara-approved-for-use-in-scotland/

"Around 125,000 people in Scotland suffer from psoriasis, a common condition which is not only painful and unsightly but has a huge impact on how you feel about yourself – it affects your confidence and can sometimes cause depression and anxiety. This is not helped by the fact that psoriasis has a low profile and as such is often misunderstood,” comments Janice Johnson, Co-Founder and Trustee of the Psoriasis Scotland Arthritis Link Volunteers (PSALV). “Some patients who have received STELARA have seen real benefits, so the SMC’s advice for its use in NHS Scotland is a welcome decision.”

(18/12/2009) - Betesil launched

Betesil, a new and efficient way of administering betamethasone valerate, has just been launched and should be available in Scotland in early 2010. It is a gentle, yet effective medicated plaster which releases the betamethasone valerate (a tried and tested treatment that has been widely used for years) slowly over a period of 24 hours to calm down inflamed skin. The active ingredient is in the sticky layer, so any skin in contact with the plaster will get a dose of the medication (corticosteroid). It can be cut to size and is ideal for use on small areas of plaque psoriasis such as the knees and elbows which are usually difficult places to apply cream without it rubbing off on clothes etc

(21/2/2009) - Efalizumab withdrawn

The European Medicines Agency has completed a review of efalizumab (Raptiva) after concerns about its safety. The Agency’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) has concluded that the benefits of efalizumab do not outweigh its risks, and they recommend that the marketing authorisation should be suspended across the EU. Efalizumab is used to treat adults with moderate to severe chronic plaque psoriasis who have not responded to, or who are unable to take, other treatments for this disease.

This medicine was reviewed after reports of serious side effects, including three confirmed cases of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML, a severely disabling or fatal disease of the central nervous system) in patients who had received efalizumab for more than 3 years; two of these patients died.

Further information, including a question and answer sheet, is available on the European Medicine Agency’s website at http://www.emea.europa.eu/
