(1/6/2010) - Arthritis Care’s survey

Arthritis Care’s survey indicates that pain is having a serious impact on the everyday lives of people in the UK who have arthritis. The survey of over 2,000 people with arthritis shows that pain is frequently preventing people from carrying out typical daily activities, such as making a cup of tea, going to the shops or even hugging a loved one.

It reveals that 63% of people with arthritis find it difficult to have sex when their pain is at its worst. 36% of respondents said pain actually prevents them from having intimate relationships. With over half of respondents (57%) saying that their pain would have to be ‘unbearable’ for them to seek help from their doctor or specialist, Arthritis Care is concerned that millions of people are unnecessarily ‘suffering in silence’. The charity is calling on people to seek early support before pain takes over their lives.

(14/5/2010) - Psoriasis Documentary

We need you!

Be part of a new documentary on the lives of those with psoriasis.

We are involved in the creation of a new documentary series called Under the Spotlight, to raise awareness of the impact of psoriasis on a person’s life over time and reach out to others who may be going through similar experiences. The series will be viewed online by the general public and healthcare professionals.

The documentary will follow people with psoriasis over a number of years, through a series of short film recordings, to highlight key events in their life. There is no obligation to make any commitment at this stage but if you would like to be filmed as part of these series, please contact Janice at the Psoriasis Association on 0131 556 4117 or by email at janice.johnson5@btinternet.com.

The Psoriasis Uncovered documentary is being supported by Abbott UK and presented by Psoriasis Scotland.

(12/5/2010) - Lack Of UnderStanding

Large-scale international internet questionnaire study about understanding and lack of understanding for rheumatic diseases, recently started in the Netherlands at Utrecht University .

Patients with rheumatic diseases report that lack of understanding for their illness is an important issue in their lives. We call this lack of understanding by others ‘invalidation’. The aim of our study is to examine how much understanding and invalidation by others is experienced by people who have a rheumatic disease. We also want to examine the consequences of this understanding or invalidation. We would like to compare this between different countries. Patients with any rheumatic disease can fill out a questionnaire on the internet in their own language, which will take approximately 20 minutes. Participation will be voluntary and anonymous.

(14/2/2010) - Stelara Approved

SMC approves new medicines in Scotland, In England it`s NICE.
Patient charities can send in specific submissions about new drugs which they believe will assist.
PSALV sent in a submission re Stelara, also Etrivex.
We believe this has assisted Scots patients living with psoriasis, as we need a wide range of options available.

http://www.pharmajobs.co.uk/blog/index.php/2010/02/stelara-approved-for-use-in-scotland/

"Around 125,000 people in Scotland suffer from psoriasis, a common condition which is not only painful and unsightly but has a huge impact on how you feel about yourself – it affects your confidence and can sometimes cause depression and anxiety. This is not helped by the fact that psoriasis has a low profile and as such is often misunderstood,” comments Janice Johnson, Co-Founder and Trustee of the Psoriasis Scotland Arthritis Link Volunteers (PSALV). “Some patients who have received STELARA have seen real benefits, so the SMC’s advice for its use in NHS Scotland is a welcome decision.”
